Bioinformatics Solutions Inc. (BSI) is proud to share exciting work from owner and founder, Prof. Dr. Ming Li, and Senior Research Scientist, Dr. Hieu Tran, in the advancements for personalised cancer treatment. Their work in machine learning was recently highlighted by the University of Waterloo’s press which quickly summarised the concept behind cancer immunotherapy and the research that Prof. Dr. Li and Dr. Tran have accomplished, to further the development of this type of treatment. Compared to other types of cancer treatments, cancer immunotherapy is personalised for each specific individual by using the patient’s own immune system to fight the cancer. In a statement from Prof. Dr. Li, “Every patient is different and every cancer is different, so cancer treatment shouldn’t be the same for all. Treatment should be tailored to the patient, and that’s what our personalised machine learning model allows us to do.” By using machine learning, Prof. Dr. Li and Dr. Tran are able to analyse known patient immunopeptidomes to train algorithms, such as their published recurrent neural-network model, DeepNovo, to predict the mutated, cancer-presenting peptides known as neoantigens to develop cancer vaccines personalised to each patient.
